Auto-scroll

Use steady scrolling, synchronize a chart to audio, or teach a PDF when to move.

What it does

Imported scores have two approaches to scrolling. Steady Autoscroll moves at a set rate. Synced Autoscroll follows the attached audio recording using automatic chart matching or a scrolling pass you record by hand.

Turning it on

Open an imported score and use its scrolling controls. Steady scrolling does not need an attached recording. For synchronized scrolling, attach an audio file; capture a video’s audio first if you are using YouTube.

The Sync badge

The sync status tells you whether timing is available for the attached audio recording:

• ·Synced: the score follows bar for bar, repeats included.
• ·Syncing…: Afinar is learning the song. This happens on its own.
• ·Not synced: synchronized timing is unavailable. You can use steady scrolling or sync the scroll by hand.

How a score becomes Synced

• ·Guitar Pro and MusicXML charts can match an audio recording. Import the chart, choose your instrument part, and attach the recording you want to play with.
• ·A chart with an audio file can be matched automatically. Allow processing to finish, then check that the chart moves at the right time.
• ·A chart with a YouTube link gets the audio out of the video first. Choose Get the audio from this video, on the recording’s name in the bar. Afinar plays it through once at normal speed and keeps what it hears. After that the score has its own recording, and it syncs the way any recording does.

Sync the scroll by hand

For PDFs or a score that hasn’t synced correctly, open Manually sync the scroll… from the play menu. The score goes to the top, the recording rewinds, and the bottom of the window becomes one row that says SYNCING. Play the song and scroll to keep your place near the center. You can also use arrow keys or a page-turn pedal. It ends when the song ends, or when you press Finish.

Leaving before the song ends or you press Finish discards the pass. If it doesn’t cover enough of the score, Afinar asks you to try again. You can do it again later with Sync the scroll again… in the same menu.

When a score and a recording don’t match

Automatic matching works best when the chart and recording use the same arrangement. Different introductions, repeats, or endings can prevent a reliable match.

If the score moves ahead of the music or falls behind, try syncing the scroll by hand. PDFs and drum charts need manual synchronization.

Check the scrolling during playback, even when the status says Synced.

It matches. The chart follows the timing Afinar found in the recording.

It cannot find a match. Sync the scroll by hand to give the score timing for this recording.

The match is wrong. A Synced status can still have timing errors. Replace that timing with a manual scrolling pass.

To replace incorrect timing, open Setup and choose Sync the scroll yourself instead…. A manual scrolling pass replaces the automatic timing. If you change your mind, Use Afinar’s own timing appears in the same panel and restores it. Your manual pass is kept.

While the music plays

You can scroll to look ahead or return to an earlier passage while the music plays. After you stop scrolling, Autoscroll returns to the current position.
